Die Darstellung mit schwarzer Farbe des freskenähnlich gemalten Bildes versinnbildlicht die Trennung zwischen Armut und Reichtum. Einerseits als Sohn eines reichen Tuchhändlers geboren, wendet er sich vom Reichtum des Vaters ab. Armut und Bescheidenheit bestimmen fortan sein Leben und Wirken.
